PMO Essentials Course
There are four different "Essentials for PMO" Courses administered by the House of PMO:
- Essentials for PMO Directors
- Essentials for PMO Managers
- Essentials for PMO Analysts
- Essentials for PMO Administrators
The House of PMO Essentials course range is accredited by APMG International.
Essentials for PMO Directors
The House of PMO sets the standard and the syllabus for the Essentials for PMO Director qualification. If you are currently working in a PMO management or leadership, or hoping to become one soon, this course will help give you knowledge and the understanding to undertake the role. You will learn about the role of the PMO Director and the context within which the PMO Director works. Specifically, the qualification covers:
- The roles and responsibilites of the PMO Director including the key knowledge, skills and behaviours required
- The core competences required in P3M Enabling. It includes designing an integrated PMO model; setting the vision and creating the ecosystem for multiple PMOs to thrive and deliver real value to the organisation
- The Essentials for PMO Directors course is aimed at PMO Directors, Enterprise PMO Managers, Portfolio Managers, PMO Managers (typically ‘the’ PMO Manager in an organisation), Heads of Delivery (where they have delivery and PMO accountability)
The following pre-requisites are applicable for this scheme:
Essentials for PMO Managers OR;
A Practitioner certificate in either P3O®, PRINCE2®, PRAXIS Framework™, AgilePM®, MSP®, PRINCE2 Agile, APM PFQ, PMQ, PM4SD™, PMP®, PgMP®, or CAPM or equivalent OR;
3 years’ experience of working within a PMO, project, programme or portfolio environment

Essentials for PMO Managers
The House of PMO sets the standard and the syllabus for the Essentials for PMO Manager qualification. If you are currently working in a PMO management or leadership, or hoping to become one soon, this course will help give you knowledge and the understanding to undertake the role. You will learn about the role of the PMO Manager and the context within which the PMO Manager works. Specifically, the qualification covers:
- The roles and responsibilites of the PMO Manager including the key knowledge, skills and behaviours required
- The core competences required in Delivery Support, PMO Management and P3M Enabling. It includes setting up, running, transforming and closing PMOs.
The Essentials for PMO Managers course is aimed at PMO Managers, PMO Leads, aspiring PMO Managers (PMO Analysts and converts to PMO from Project/Programme Manager roles)
The following pre-requisites are applicable for this scheme:
Essentials for PMO Analysts OR;
A Practitioner certificate in either P3O®, PRINCE2®, PRAXIS Framework™️, AgilePM®, MSP®, PRINCE2 Agile, APM PFQ, PMQ, PM4SD™️, PMP®, PgMP®, or CAPM or equivalent OR;
3 years’ experience of working within a PMO, project, programme or portfolio environment
Essentials for PMO Analysts
The first House of PMO Essentials course was an entry level qualification for PMO Administrators. This new offering is for the next PMO role – PMO Analysts. The House of PMO sets the standard and the syllabus for the Essentials for PMO Analyst qualification. This course will help you:
- Learn the purpose of the four key roles in a Project Management Office; Administrator, Analyst, Manager and Director
- Understand the purpose and contents of a PMO Service Catalogue and what’s involved in the set-up, running and closure of a PMO Service
- Explore the responsibilities, knowledge, skills and behaviour needed to be a successful PMO Analysts. Including key delivery support and P3M enabling competences.
The Essentials for PMO Analysts course is aimed at current and aspiring PMO Analysts. The following pre-requisites are applicable for this scheme:
- Essentials for PMO Administrators
- A Foundation certificate in either PRINCE2®, PRAXIS Framework™️, AgilePM®, MSP®, PRINCE2 Agile, APM PFQ, PMQ, PM4SD™️, PMP®, PgMP®, or CAPM
- Any other formally recognised Project Management certification at a Foundation level (including internal or non-certified courses)
Essentials for PMO Administrators
The House of PMO sets the standard and the syllabus for the Essentials for PMO Administrator qualifications. The entry level role for the PMO is a PMO Administrator and this course and qualification you’ll learn the core principles of Project Management and how to use these within the context of a Project Management Office (PMO).

- Learn essential Project, Programme and Portfolio Management principles and terminology
- Discover the four key roles in a Project Management Office; Administrator, Analyst, Manager and Director
- Explore the responsibilities, knowledge, skills and behavior needed to be a successful PMO Administrator. Including understanding the core and essential delivery support requirements in change control; financial management, information management, issue management, reporting (insights analysis) and risk management.
Essentials for PMO Administrators is suitable for complete beginners and those currently in support roles within a PMO (for example Project Administrators, Project Co-ordinator and Project Support Officers). It is also suitable for aspiring Project Managers with minimal project management knowledge.
